Motherland Coffee Company
Rosebank, South Africa
The brief for this coffee shop was to design a warm, welcoming, relaxed space that had elements of Africa while retaining an international style. The client is intending on franchising and taking the brand international, so the design had to be something that would work both in South Africa and abroad and be able to compete with any similar store in the international arena. Care was given to keep costs as low as possible so as to make franchising a financially viable option.
There is a strong environmental focus in the company, so many of the finishes were chosen with this in mind. Modern furniture was combined with organic elements such as the side tables and lamp. Turned wooden light fittings combine modern lines with the warmth of wood, while simple oversized globes create the ambient lighting. The white chairs bring a freshness to the varnished raw concrete floor. The use of black creates a bold contrast for the company’s branding. Aged raw wood was used on the walls and the counters.
